In search of adventure, 21-year-old Warwickshire farm labourer Bernard Byrne packed his bags and went to Australia as a '£10 Pom'. During the eighteen years that followed he travelled all over the country, had thirty-eight different jobs and ended up owning a sapphire mine in the gem fields of Queensland.

Now back in Shipston-on-Stour, the little market town from where he walked out one May morning all those years ago, he has come full circle. A central tragedy adds poignancy to this quite extraordinary life story.
