Following in the wake of Sir Francis Drake's first circumnavigation of the world in 1577, veteran explorer Col John Blashford-Snell led a ship-based expedition during which successive groups of young people aged between 17 and 24, many of them from under privileges backgrounds, joined seasoned explorers, scientists and various other experts to work on a varied programme of activities in remote locations around the world aimed at combining the thrill of adventure with serious scientific exploration and research and community projects.
